glasgow school of art

Having studied architecture and writing about Art Nouveau & Japonisme for my undergrad thesis, I've always wanted to visit the Glasgow School of Art. Guided by a graduate of the school, the tour was very informative and insightful. Charles Rennie McIntosh who designed the school was an architect during the Arts and Crafts Movement and a major supporter of Art Nouveau. He was a naturalist and was strongly influenced by Japan, which could be seen and felt throughout the details of the building.

The Japanese influences were more profound in the interior with lattice details and dark wood. Walking up the stairs, through the dark narrow wooden halls, it almost felt like an old Japanese house.

McIntosh thought that roses have the perfect form so he often used them as motifs. He expressed his naturalist beliefs in a manner of a seed budding towards the sun or students growing as in these railing details as well as in the interior design, creating spaces that move from dark to light.

The famous Willow Tearoom.
